110.23 Staffing

PURPOSE:

To establish a baseline directive to maintain an adequate staffing levels and ensure that personnel’s hours worked are documented correctly.

PROCEDURE:

Staffing Guidelines

  • Attendance will be reviewed each shift by the on duty Battalion Chief and OIC from each station to ensure accuracy. It will be the responsibility of the on duty Battalion Chief to ensure the staffing program is accurate.
  • Any hold over, overtime, or any other attendance times will be emailed by the employee to the OIC, on duty Battalion Chief and mfd@itsmymaitland.com (Fire Administration) by 8pm that day. If outside of work, a text message (in lieu of an email), will be required by 8pm that day.
  • Shift members are typically scheduled to work 24 hours on duty and 48 hours off duty. The standard shift begins at 0700 and ends at 0700 hours the following day.
  • During normal operation, a minimum of eleven (11) personnel is required per shift. Of that 11, one must be a Battalion Chief or ride-up Battalion Chief, one must be a shift Lieutenant or ride-up Lieutenant assigned to each apparatus, one must be an autonomous Paramedic assigned to each rescue vehicle, and one must be an Engineer or relief driver assigned to drive each apparatus. Tower 45 will require minimum of 3 tower certified personnel (OIC, Driver and firefighter)
  • Two Engineers may fill the role as relief Lieutenant when there is a Battalion Chief on duty. Engineers must have filled the roll for at least 1 year to qualify for the 2 Engineer ride up rule.

40-Hour Shift Reassignment

  • Members may be reassigned to a 40-hour work week to accommodate the needs of the department.
  • The schedule will be adjusted so that the member will not lose any pay by being assigned to a 40-hour work week.
  • All efforts will be made to prevent a member assigned to a 40-hour work week from working beyond the 40-hour schedule (i.e. shift overtime or returning to their shift for duty).
  • In the event that the member is needed for minimum staffing, the hours worked will be considered overtime as long as the member completes the 40-hour work week.
  • The member will be compensated at their blended pay rate for those hours worked over the 40-hour period as minimum manning.
