310.02 Juvenile Fire Setter Intervention

PURPOSE:

To outline the procedures for enrollment in the Juvenile Fire Setter Intervention (JFS) course.

PROCEDURE:

• Defining who is a juvenile fire setter:
  • Any juvenile who is 17 years old or younger.
  • Any juvenile who either intentionally or unintentionally starts a fire.
  • Any juvenile who may or may not cause bodily harm or property damage.

• Referral of juvenile to the Juvenile Fire Setter Intervention Course:
  • The Company Officer should notify the Battalion Chief of an intentional or unintentional fire set by a juvenile.
  • If a fire is intentionally set, inform local law enforcement, State Fire Marshal, or fire investigator of the Juvenile Fire Setter Intervention course that is offered in Seminole County and have the juvenile mandatorily referred to the class by the officer or investigator. Please note that the preferred method of mandatory referral should come through law enforcement, State Fire Marshal, or fire investigators.
  • If law enforcement is not involved in the case, inform parent/caregiver of the Juvenile Fire Setter Intervention course and suggest the juvenile voluntarily be referred to the class, such as a parent coming to Fire Administration seeking assistance.
  • The Company Officer should completely fill out the proper Juvenile Fire Setter referral form, which can be found on the Department’s K Drive.
  • The Company Officer will pass the information on to the Juvenile Fire Setter Intervention Specialist within Maitland Fire Rescue Department.
