Section 2 - EMERGENCY OPERATIONS

230.08 SunRail Emergencies

PURPOSE:

To establish guidelines for SunRail emergencies involving the train.

PROCEDURE:

  • Upon arrival of any SunRail emergency, the OIC will make all attempts to locate a railway engineer or conductor. If none are present, ensure Orange County Dispatch notifies the SunRail Communication Center.
  • Crews will ensure the train engine is stopped and brake is engaged.
  • If required, once the train has been mechanically shut down and brakes applied, the batteries will be disconnected utilizing the shut off switch located in the rear of the power car.
  • If required, access the emergency door release mechanism by using a large philips head screwdriver and pulling door release cord.
  • If access requires responders to remove emergency windows, use a flat headed screwdriver to remove the rubber molding holding the window in place. Use extreme caution when removing the window as these tend to be very heavy and 2 personnel may be required for removal.
  • If access requires responders to access the roof, extension ladders will be utilized to ascend the train to the roof. Crews will look for dotted areas signifying the safe cutout areas.
  • OIC's need to ensure contact with railway Engineer at the conclusion of the emergency.
  • OIC's shall declare a State Warning Point notification if condition warrants.
  • OIC's shall ensure Maitland Police are notified of the incident.
  • The on duty Battalion Chief shall respond to all incidents involving trains.
